The Habibi Building

As of May 1st, 2015, it looks like this may have fallen through. We have not had great communication with the owner or tenant and that is essential to completing the project. If that changes, we may be back on, but for now, we think this one is no longer happening.

A quick update about the Habibi building project:  John and Vicki have found themselves overbooked for the next few weeks between finishing the Phoenix mural, John’s new full time job and each of us having an art show! We are trying to catch our breath before creating the 3 designs for the Habibi building vote. In the midst of all of this, someone has removed the comment poster from the Habibi building window and we have not had time to contact the owner to sort it out, reprint and rehang the poster. This, unfortunately, narrows our outreach. Until we can get this corrected, lets just keep the comments coming on this website, by email and in person at the next Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association meeting at Foster Burger on Monday, February 9th, 6:30pm.

The comments we have received so far have been intriguing. We are a neighborhood of thoughtful, creative individuals. Keep the ideas rolling, we look forward to the vote!

Dear Neighbors

Please take a moment to leave us your thoughts about an art project for this window. What magical, beautiful, extraordinary thing would you like to see in this window? A group of volunteers (you can help, too) will create a work of art that is inspired by your comments or drawings. Be as specific or as vague as you like.

A mural celebrating the surrounding neighborhood’s cultural diversity would be fantastic here. Lots of varied and bright colors to makes this stretch of street pop. The Phoenix Pharmacy design will look great, but is pretty monochromatic and mostly celebrates the historical use of the street. I’d really like to see something celebrating the newer residents that make this ‘hood currently so interesting, along with a visual representation of the complexity of color present in our daily interactions with one another. A complementary opposite to the Phoenix mural, if you will.

Great idea. We hope to go less mural and more diorama (3-dimensional) this time. Color and culture is good input-thanks!

If a design needs a wooden cut-out of a horse or a horse that could be turned into a unicorn, I have what you’re looking for. I think any art in these windows will look fantastic! Thank you for your work on this project.

I’d love to see something less representational and more abstract. It feels like too many “community” murals are too literal with the concept: here’s a person playing tennis, here’s a kid skipping rope, etc. We’re going to be getting another such mural on the Mercado which will also be diversity themed. My vote is for something abstract with movement and energy like the new one slated for Lents Town Center.

Agree with celebrating the multicultural, multigenerational, and linguistic diversity of the area. Foster is one of the gateways to the more international districts of the Portland Metro Area…
